I owe a lot to a guppy. It may sound silly, but in light of my childhood, I cannot deny a guppy sparked my interest in biology. One day, when I was an elementary school student, I heard from my teacher that the only underwater mammal was a whale. Upon hearing it, I felt curiosity lighting up inside me and I wanted to check whether the guppy I had at home was a mammal or not, because I saw guppy’s babies coming from mother’s belly. I didn’t completely make sense to me. Then, I started reading through an encyclopedia and learned so many things; that mammals breast-feed their babies, that a guppy belongs to ovoviviparous animals, and that they produce eggs hatching within the mother’s body. this was so powerful an experience that a desire to know more about living creatures became ingrained into my mind, which later motivated me to choose biology as the major for the undergrade studes. Owing to guppy, I am still involved in the biological science, especially stem cell biology, as a PhD student in America, not my home country.
