Frankenstein, now I make good friends with my rats ~~~

Posted by Sun Lijuan on 31 May 2010

I'm determined to study biology when reading "Frankenstein". At that time I was a little girl --- the youngest kid in the family, and kept imaging that one day I could create my own Frankenstein to beat my elder brothers and sisters. Simply because they kept bullying me and taking my toys away from me, hahaha~~~~~For so many years, it's always my interest to work on (and I prefer to say "work with") living things, like E-coli, yeast, cells, mice, rats, even dogs. Among them, rats are my favorite. They look so cute, so adorable, like a little ball of fur, and they are far smarter than you think. You know what, these snowballs can even recognize and trust you if you take care of them for a while. See, in my picture, this rat is having fun hanging out with me (it really take guts for a girl like me to take this picture). But kindly, DO NOT do that with your rats, you may get bitten. My rats won't, of cause.Love your animals, they'll love you back; Love your Bio, and you'll get paid, too.You guys have fun!

Looking for a Vet

Posted by Felix Royo on 27 May 2010

I believe I become study Veterinary because my pet dies few months after this picture. However, as a Vet, I am a disaster, since I usually faint when I see bleeding wounds. But I keep fighting form the bench.

A challange to Human community!

Posted by Ananda Ayyappan on 14 May 2010

A virus that says its story....yes it our align....HIV!! I was always excited when I was started studying about Viruses, they are unicellular, ultramicroscopic and completely depends with their host but causing lethal infection/diseases. So my Bio begun here: One of the prominent member of them,of course well known to all is HIV. It is around 120 nm in diameter (around 60 times smaller than a red blood cell),carrying 2 single stranded RNA components(9749 nucleotides long)as its Genome, encoding a few proteins like p24,Vif, Vpr, Nef, p7,viral Protease,gp120 and gp41..affecting the speices having all the rights to live in our earth!! This miniature is capable of destroying a well organised species bearing 3 billion DNA base pairs,as double stranded DNA,coading around 25,000 protein bla bla….The tool that HIV has is it’s high mutation rate!!HIV differs from many viruses in that it has very high genetic variability. We know what it has done so far to our community! So I would like to be a part of researcher against AIDS, currently working on APOBEC3-Vif proteins to understand its strutural biology. Let’s we will hope for the best.

It all happened when i was 8 years old i have seen for the first time movie that showed that is possible to bring back to life long ago exctincted species. I watched it again and again, around 30 times:). Spilberg"s film showed really advanced molecular techniques for that time. Back then i was really astonished with all those giants that exticted 65 millions years ago. All that molecular biology methods of extracting DNA from mosquitoes covered in amber, breeding new baby dinos in control environment looked so possible and excited, that i was determined to study something related to modern genetics. And who would than believe, now I accomplished Biochemistry and i am currently PhD student on field of Biochemistry, everyday involved in modern genetics methods. That movie have made impression on me and that is why i am where i am now. Everything is possible and do not make borders to your imagination, set it free!!
