My search on research

Posted by Judith Zavala on 19 Apr 2010

I always thought that ideally job would be the one that you could do and enjoy even if you don’t get paid for it. Before being here, doing differentiation of stem cells into neurons for neurodegenerative diseases treatment, I tried another few unlike things. Finishing my college studies as clinical laboratory scientist, my jobs were in blood banks and clinical laboratories. I even tried to sell medications. Well, none of that made me feel completely fulfilled as I do now, spending the time it takes enjoying what I do. I never thought I could be doing what I do, because it was not planned. I started to study a master when after a year working on clinical laboratories I felt boring. I wanted to change my field of application. In the master I worked on breast cancer with nutraceutics, it opened a new perspective of what I’m capable to do speaking of analyze, perform experiments, processing results, etc. It represented a challenge to me all the time and I loved it. But still there was a little empty to fill. Then, finishing the master, doctors of Stem Cell Therapy department in the same university gave me an opportunity to work with them. The experience was brand new to me. And that is when it happened. Projection of what the job in the lab means to degenerative diseases cure is very exciting to me. Now I know I could be in this field for a long time. I’m on my last year in PhD doing research in stem cell therapy for Parkinson disease, thanks to people who gave me the opportunity without knowing I would discover my real professional vocation.
